Country Star Quilt Guild Meeting Minutes

03/09/26

Call to Order

President, Lori Frederick called the meeting to order at 7:08 pm.

Welcome

Lori welcomed everyone and recognized our three new members: Lynda Edwards, Robin Larabee, and Gerry Milligan.  Lori gave an update on Peggy Smith’s sister and brother-in-law following a serious accident this past weekend.

Devotion

Elaine Wilkerson presented our devotion entitled “Piece by Piece”. The devotion was based on Matthew 6: 33-34.

Announcements

Our next Sit N Sew’s are scheduled for Friday, March 13th and 27th at the Masonic Lodge in Callahan from 9am to 3pm.  We were encouraged to come and sew or just drop in for a visit; we would love to have you. Our next meeting is Monday, April 13th at the Anchor Church in Callahan.

Guild Supported Charities

Lori thanked everyone for the donations of diapers for The Nest and pillowcases for Ryan’s Case for Smiles. We have a few more pillowcase kits here tonight that are ready to be made.

Quilt of Valor

Lori called on Sue Deyo to give us an update. We have 11 recipients in our queue currently. Our next presentation will be Nov 10th at North Jacksonville Baptist Church at 6:30pm. Sue called on Barbara Perkins to share her experience of being the wife of a recipient. She spoke about being able to use his quilt to spread the word about Quilts of Valor to others.  The Quilt of Valor Foundation February newsletter, “Threads” featured a picture, on the front page, of our last presentation.

Nominating Committee

A committee is in place and is working on filling the roles of President and Vice President and any other vacancies for the coming year.

Guild Retreat

We had a great week and missed all that could not attend. Special thank you’s to Bonnie Cressey, Peggy Smith and Marsa Detscher for your coordination of our retreat.  Lori advised that we did not book the Eco Lodge in Fargo, Ga for 2027. Lori and Sue took a trip to Crooked River State Park in St Mary’s, Ga. The sewing facility is very nice.  We have booked cabins 1-7 for February 23rd-27th, 2027. There is a total of 29 beds in these 7 cabins, no sleeping on couches necessary. The sewing area is approximately a mile plus from the cabins.

Program

Lori turned the floor over to Sara Aicher. Sara wished everyone a Happy National Quilting Month! Chris Sandstrom will give a presentation on various types of batting at our April meeting.  Our “Start-Up” topic for April will be pin cushions and friendship quilts. Sara asked for a show of hands of anyone who has a quilt 50 years old and older. Several members acknowledged having quilts of this age.  Sara advised there may be a program coming up to showcase them.

Clipboards were passed around for the following:

  • Barn Quilt- Sign up if interested in attending a class to make one
  • Free Motion Quilting- Sign up if interested – to be led by Lisa Maechtlen
  • Color Crayon Quilt- Suggestions on what to do with our Collaborative project quilt

Sara turned the floor over to Carol Blanchard to present our program. Carol went over the requirements for the Guild Challenge Quilts and advised all quilts submitted met the requirements. She then explained the categories on the judging sheet and what to look for.

All in attendance were requested to “judge” each quilt and sheets were turned in to be tallied and comments to be shared with the makers.  Final results will be given at our April meeting. Carol advised that when entering a quilt to be judged we should learn from the judges’ comments in order to improve our skills.

Other Items of Interest

Door prizes were given and we had Show N Tell

Lori adjourned the meeting at 8:52 pm.
