June 2017 Meeting Minutes

Country Star Quilt Guild Meeting Minutes

June 12, 2017

The meeting was called to order by Chris Sandstrom at 7:00 pm.

Visitors were welcomed.

Chris read us a short story about a Penny Angel Quilt.  A sweet story about a grandmother and the quilts she’s made for her grandchildren.

Chris recognized Mary Ann Waite for her First-Place finish at the ‘Quilts by the River’ Quilt Show where she showed her Harry Potter Quilt.  Congratulations Mary Ann.

Business Matters:

Quilt Fest is coming up in September.  Go to QuiltFestJax.com to find out more information about submitting your entry.  Chris encouraged members to participate in this quilt show.  Entry forms must be submitted in July.  Take-in will be in September.

New Business:

VA Quilt project will continue.  Ava Pitts has designed the quilt and it is in progress.

Pillowcases will be a continuing project.  Remember no dominant Red color and no glitter for pillowcase fabric.

Pinky Promise was approached by Sue Deyo and is being considered as a Charity Project for the coming year.  Pinky Promise assists women in Nassau County who have cancer.

The Nest was approached by Mary Ann.  The Nest is a Christian organization, in Duval and Nassau Counties, that assists women with unplanned pregnancies.  Layettes are provided for women who go through the program, following required steps.  The guild could provide the layettes/baby quilts.

Heart Pillows for cancer/surgery patients.

Mary Ann asked for volunteers for Charity Chairmen.

Linda Greene volunteered to be mini-chair for Heart Pillow project.

Dane Ruser volunteered to be mini-chair for the Pillowcase project.

A volunteer is still needed for Pinky Promise and The Nest projects.

More Sit’N’Sews are being considered as well as longer Sit’N’Sews.  Information will be posted on website or emailed. Some of the upcoming Sit’N’Sews will be learning/teaching opportunities.

A Sit’N’Sew is scheduled for June 20, 2017.  The lesson will be Foundation Strip/Scrap Piecing, taught by Mary Ann.  A sign-up sheet was provided for those interested in participating.

An activity being considered for the upcoming year is a two-day quilt retreat, for learning a new technique or just working on a current project.

Gail Bowen gave a Treasurer’s report listing $1,698.33 in the checking account as of 4/30/17.

Chris talked to us about the Special Events and Projects for the 2017/2018 year.  It’s going to be a busy Fall.  The VA quilt is to be finished and delivered mid-October.

A good representation by the guild was encouraged for Quilt Fest.

Chris reminded us of the two spaces that will be available to our quilt guild for the Fair, which is in October.  Representation at the booth is encouraged.  We are going to have a raffle quilt at the Fair.  It is a Christmas themed, queen sized quilt and will be shown at the Fair and there are two people who have committed to making the raffle quilt.  Every member of the guild will be expected to buy a certain number of raffle tickets.  Members are encouraged to sell the tickets or fill out tickets with own name and enter for raffle.

Conner’s Amazing Acres Heritage Days will be on November 4, 2017.  We will have a large, covered space where we can sell items, set up a quilt frame or work on a quilt.  Members planning to attend were encouraged to dress in period costume.  Conner’s will promote the Guild in their advertising of Heritage Days.  Our raffle quilt will be shown at Heritage Days as well as at the Fair.

We will participate in Santa’s Secret Shop again this year.  The Raffle Quilt will be shown at the school hosting the Santa’s Secret Shop.

The drawing for the Raffle Quilt will be held after the Santa’s Secret Shop.

Chris is looking at mid-late April for a Quilt Retreat.

Mary Ann asked for suggestions for future Sit’N’Sew projects.

Sandy Arcari had a suggestion for learning to make a small, zippered bag.

Many beautiful items were shared for Show and Tell.

Door prizes were awarded.

The meeting was adjourned at 8:00 pm with a motion by Barbara Perkins which was seconded by Gail Bowen.
