October 2017 Meeting Minutes

Country Star Quilt Guild Meeting Notes, October 201

The meeting was called to order at 7:00 pm.

President, Mary Ann Waite prayed and then presented Chris Sandstrom with a gift for being president of the guild for the past two years.

Mary Ann asked members if they had received a calendar and pencil then encouraged everyone to mark the second Monday of each month as a guild meeting and the third Tuesday of each month as a sit’n’sew.  Additional dates for the calendar were Callahan Fair, which started on 10/12/17 and goes through Sunday, 10/22/17.  11/4/17 at Conner’s Corner, and 11/18 Pioneer Day, Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge.

A motion was made to accept the June meeting minutes as shown on website.  The motion was seconded and carried.

Membership Report – Sherry Curtis – New members were asked if they had received their goodie bags, membership cards and stars.  Sherry explained the name tag to members and that if they wore them to the meeting, they would receive a ticket for a door prize.  There were 17 new members signed up at the meeting and 6 visitors.  Next month a 50/50 raffle will be started.  Bring your dollars.  Tickets will be $1 ea. or 6 for $5.  Whatever money is taken in for tickets will be split with 50% going to the guild and 50% going to the raffle winner.  Sherry needs pictures of new members for the directory at next meeting.

Visitors were recognized and introduced themselves.

Bea Mehl gave an update on the September Sit n’Sew.  There were 9 ladies at the previous Sit n’Sew and 21 pillows were made.  Mary Ann announced a class teaching the Storm at Sea pattern using Deb Tucker’s Studio 180 ruler.  Bea has the ruler in her online store.  Bea also gives a guild discount at her online store.  Use the code CSQG-15 for your discount.

Charity Report – The Nest helps women who have an unplanned pregnancy.  There will be more information on that charity at the next guild meeting.

Chris Sandstrom talked to the guild about upcoming events; The Fair, help is still needed and a sign-up sheet is available.  Chris showed the guild the Charity Fundraiser Quilt and pillow shams.  Tickets were available to purchase.  The drawing will be held on 12/15/17 at Southeast Bank in Hilliard by one of the bank officials.  Tickets will be sold at the fair, at the North Jax Fixer Upper (146 tickets were sold).  So far over 300 tickets have been sold.

VA Quilt – Sherry and MaryAnn were planning to go to the Memorial Service at the Lake City Veteran’s Hospital where the quilt will be presented.  Chris showed the completed quilt to the guild.  The original design was by Bea Mehl and Ava Pitts and some adjustments were made to accommodate all the names.  The presentation will take place on 10/19/17.  Anyone attending should be there by 4:15, and the program starts at 5:00.

Heritage Days on 11/4/17.  Sign-up sheet available for help with quilting or working the craft sale table.  Guild members were encouraged to wear period costume/dress.

Pioneer Days at Okefenokee Swamp on 11/18/17.  We will demonstrate quilting there.

Charity Fundraiser Quilt tickets will be sold at both of these events.

Santa’s Secret Shop at Hilliard Elementary School 12/4-8/17.  The school will sell fundraiser tickets for us.  15% of their ticket sales will go to the school.  PTO would like more crafters for this sale.

North Florida Shop Hop starts in January. 1/13-20/17. Chris has cards available.

More business cards have been printed up and were available, thanks to Sara Aicher.  Guild members were encouraged to carry some cards in their wallets so they could easily share with anyone that showed an interest.

Unfinished Business – Sara Aicher went over the guild website.  The website address is shown on the business card and bookmark. For Show and Tell, Sara is trying to put some info on the website along with pictures.  If you bring Show and Tell items, you can fill out a little slip, that will be in a basket at the membership table, and give to Sara so she can put the info with your show and tell picture.  Note on slip if you do NOT want your picture on the website.

New Business – Sandy Arcari mentioned that the MCCI activity center in Callahan would like people to go to the center to present a quilting workshop.  Sandy has name and number of lady at the center who can be contacted if anyone would like to do that.

Treasurer Report – Gail Bowen – 355 tickets sold so far for the charity quilt (opportunity quilt) .

Challenge for December – Sue Deyo – make a home holiday décor item.  Doesn’t have to be Christmas or Thanksgiving, can be any holiday.  Due in December meeting.  Also for the Dec meeting, members will need to bring 1 yard of batik.  Don’t worry about color, just bring 1 yard of batik.  Do not wash it.

For November meeting, we will talk about memory quilts.  If anyone has made any kind of memory quilt, bring it to the November meeting so we can see your quilt and hear your stories.

Sue Deyo went through the survey members were asked to fill out to help everyone get to know each other.

Many beautiful quilts were presented for Show and Tell.

Mary Ann introduced Sybil Shepherd from Pinky Promise.  Sybil explained how Pinky Promise got started in 2015 and what it has become.  She shared some of the items that are given to cancer patients that make their way to her place.  Several heart pillows were made by guild members and given to Sybil for Pinky Promise.
