September 2018 Meeting Minutes

Sue Deyo, President, called the meeting to order at 7pm.
Devotion/Prayer: Sue Deyo read a brief story and offered a devotional and opening prayer.

Welcome to our Visitors: Sue Deyo welcomed everyone to the meeting and said there would be introductions later.

Secretary Report: Ratification of June’s Minutes. Motion to approve by Mary Ann Waite, seconded by Chris Sandstrom, and passed unanimously.

Treasure Report: Bea Mehl discussed financial activities since the last Report. The Report was accepted without vote.

Membership Report: Sherry Curtis reported a total of 42 members and 56 present this evening.

Charities Report:
Ryans Case for Smiles: Dane Ruser stated there were 198 pillowcases prior to the August Sit and Sew at which time 110 were made. This evening, 13 pillowcases came in. Grand total: 321.
The Nest: Sue Deyo read a thank you note from the director. Mary Ann Waite related that the burp cloths, crib sheets, and quilts made by the Guild members were gratefully accepted.
Pinky Promise: Michelle Whitley thanked Sybil for making the site available for the two Sit and Sews. She suggested that while they had plenty of crocheted throws, lap quilts would be welcomed.
VA Quilt: Mary Ann Waite, Marsa Detscher, and Sherry Curtis displayed the VA Quilt in progress. Sue Deyo discussed the presentation on October 4th and a FART (Fabric Acquisition Road Trip) proposal for that day. (See details in the Calendar below.) Sue introduced a sign-up sheet for anyone interested in receiving information about that event.

Sue asked Mary Ann to discuss the beginning quilting class. There is a full class of 15 and a waiting list of 9. (See calendar.)

Programs:
Overview of the year ahead: Gail Bowen gave a brief overview of future programs, including an applique demonstration in October, a mystery road trip in April, Suzi Parron in March, Chris’s Block of the Month medallion quilt project, and other fun events. Betty Jeffries will introduce applique techniques as the program at the October meeting; the applique class will be the Sit and Sew that Friday, though the class is now full and there is a waiting list. If members cannot
get to the Sit and Sew, they should contact Betty for personal instruction. Gail talked briefly about the June Pot Luck dinner and table settings.
Sew you want to be my sister? Gail Bowen explained that this was a program whereby Guild members would be assigned a “secret sister” – another participating Guild member that they would be paired up with to provide support and offer ongoing encouragement anonymously. There is a sign-up sheet and pairings will be announced next month.
October program preview: Betty Jeffries briefly described the upcoming starch applique demonstration at the October meeting, and class scheduled for the October 12th Sit and Sew. She stressed that if a Guild member was interested in the instruction but could not make it to the Sit and Sew, to contact her directly. She went over the materials list (small iron and iron rest, small ironing board, Pilot frixion pen. She said the class cost $10 that includes a kit with the pattern and material for the project.

At this point in the meeting, Sue Deyo asked each row of people to stand up and introduce themselves.

Old Business: Sue Deyo acknowledged a thank-you note from Kelly’s for the quilt the guild gave them.
New Business:
Santa Shoppe @ Hilliard Elementary – Sue explained that the outgoing Guild Board recommended that the Guild not participate in the Santa Shoppe or Connors Amazing Acres because there was not much benefit to the Guild. The incoming Guild Board agreed and voted not to participate.
Connors Amazing Acres – Guild will not be participating per above.
Northeast Florida Fair October 11-21 & Presentation of Raffle Quilt made by Betty Jeffreys – Betty showed the quilt she made that will be raffled for the benefit of the Guild. Chris Sandstrom is handling ticket sales. Each ticket costs $1.00 and each member is asked to take 15. The member buys the ticket from Chris and can give them away, keep them, or sell them. Additional tickets are available. The Westside Journal agreed to sell tickets, as did the VA clinic. Chris explained that she had a sign-up sheet for members to fill out, to make sure there is full
coverage at the booth where the raffle tickets will be sold.
Pinky Promise Charity Quilt – Sue explained that since Pinky Promise’s primary fundraising program – Bowling for Boobs – is questionable, she approached Sybil with the idea of a raffle quilt. Sue confirmed that Pinky Promise had the ability to market the raffle quilt and sell tickets. Michelle Whitley and Linda Greene agreed to head up that effort.
Callahan Christmas Parade & Float/Vendor Booth – Chris Sandstrom announced that she has a 16-foot trailer and is working up the design for a parade float. The theme is “Piney Woods Christmas.” She needs a few quilters to ride on the float, some to walk alongside the float, and others to precede the float holding a banner. At the same time, some need to be at the booth selling raffle tickets.
Car Decals – Marsa Detscher explained that she looked into getting vinyl stickers that had the Guild logo and “CountryStarQuilters.org” on it. She put hers on a side window of her car; they were suitable for a rear window as well. She said that depending on how many were ordered, they might cost anywhere from $7-8; she asked who might be interested in a sticker. Almost all quilters present indicated interest.
Stephen Foster State Park Quilt Show – Linda Jones advised that Elaine McGrath is the curator for the quilt show at the Stephen Foster Memorial state park. The quilt show is October 19-21. She has offered to come to our meeting on October 8th, bring her computer and register your quilt and pick up at our meeting. Linda Jones can pick the quilts up on the 21st for our members if you cannot make it to the park to pick them up yourself. This is a show that Yulee “Stitchin Sisters” have participated in for several years. There are no monetary rewards but it is
a great experience and the park is a beautiful place to visit. Linda passed out application forms to our members.
Fabric Donation: Mary Ann explained that she received a call from “Sam” in response to the Beginning Quilter Class ad in the Westside Journal. His wife, now in an ACLF with Alzheimer’s Disease, was a quilter and he offered her material to the Guild. Mary Ann picked up over a dozen totes of fabric and there is much more available. He only wanted some consideration for the fat quarters. Sue explained that the Guild would use material suitable for our ongoing
projects (VA quilt, Pinky Promise, Raffle, etc.) and would make the remainder available to the Guild members at nominal cost. (See calendar for “Guild Only Yard Sale”)
VA Quilt Presentation & FART: The VA Quilt and the proposed FART were discussed earlier.

Show & Tell – members came up to show off their beautiful works

September Program – Chris Sandstrom
Chris discussed the Block of the Month project. She said it was a Mystery Quilt and at each guild meeting, she would offer a clue to a block that would be used. The first person to figure out the block would win a prize. The first clue: I live in Germany and my air conditioning went out. What do I need? (Answer: A Dresden Fan … submitted and won by Michelle Whitley) The Mystery Quilt begins Friday, and the cost is $10 to defray expenses Chris incurred. She strongly urged participants to use a binder to organize the information and materials.
The quilt is a medallion quilt. It is critical that you mark each of your fabrics A, B, C, D and E. Make sure to wash and dry your fabrics because we will be working with bias edges. This week, we will be working with fabrics A, B, C, and E. We should cut from fabric A twenty 5 ½ inch squares.

The meeting was adjourned at 8:56pm.

Respectfully submitted by Marsa Detscher, Secretary
