Program

Lori turned the program over to Sara Aicher. Sara introduced the participants in this month’s “Get To Know You” segment: Mary Sperow, Elaine Wilkerson and Lynette Talak

A reminder was given to bring your completed Collaborative Project blocks to the March meeting if you did not return them this month. The challenge quilts are due by March 2nd. Please get with Carol Blanchard to arrange drop off.  Our “Start Up” topic for March is Pin Cushions.

Sara presented our program on 3 Hand Stitch Quilting Techniques: Pine Burr, Manx and Kawandi.

Pine Burr– Made popular by the quilters of Gee’s Bend (Alabama). This has been designated as the State quilt of Alabama. It is also known as Pinecone or Cocklebur.

Manx– Originated in the Isle of Man. This is a very remote location with limited access to sewing tools (scissors, measuring tools, etc).  They used their own hands to provide the measurements needed. The open hand was used for the size of the block. The width between the ring finger and pinky was used to determine the size of the center square.  The length of the thumb was used for the width of the strips. These blocks start in the middle and go outward resulting in spiral stitches.

Kawandi– Means “Quilt” and originated in India. The people who started this type of quilting were from Africa. These blocks start on the edge, and the stitches make concentric circles.  Old Saris were used for batting, producing very soft quilts.

Each technique was demonstrated at one of three tables and members were able to ask questions and see the samples up close.

Door prizes were given and we had Show N Tell.

Lori adjourned the meeting at 8:58 pm.
